In the interest of full disclosure, I have to say I’m not a fan of Eli Roth’s brand of horror. “Cabin Fever” had its moments, but the “Hostel” movies were soulless enterprises devoid of sympathetic characters, reveling in gore and over-the-top violence as opposed to a subtler racheting-up of the tension found in superior horror films. In short, Roth’s films aren’t scary to me. Roth’s latest, “The Green Inferno” is unfortunately more of the same. He takes a fairly intriguing idea and buries it under bland (and stupid) characters and over-the-top gore that failed to engage me on anything more than a visceral level. Continue reading →

Robert De Niro And Anne Hathaway In “The Intern”

Robert De Niro is one of the greatest actors of this or any generation, but while that’s a definite fact, his roles of late have seemed to serve as more of a greatest hits tour, relying on his well-known facial ticks and thick New York accent to get by rather than sinking his teeth into some truly juicy roles. And although he was nominated for an Oscar for his work in “Silver Linings Playbook,” I found his work in that particular film a shadow of his past performances. That said, watching the 70-year-old De Niro fully inhabit the character of Ben Whittaker in the new comedy “The Intern” was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve recently had in a movie theater. Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog!

Sometimes it takes a little while for me to get the most recent reviews up in what one would call a timely manner. I have an alter ego that unfortunately has to work every day and at odd hours. (Apparently I didn’t qualify for the alter ego that lets me leap tall buildings in a single bound. . .some guys have all the luck.) That said, I don’t want you fine folks to get bored, so I decided to put up some entertaining stuff that will be sure to get you movin’ and groovin’ in your seat. Now most folks think of James Brown, Michael Jackson, or even MC Hammer as the greatest dancers ever to prowl the stage, but I’ve got a couple of brothers that’ll blow’em all away. They’re called the Nicholas Brothers and, although their heyday was in the 1940’s, I’m sure you’ll agree that their dance moves are absolutely timeless. Enjoy! So Sayeth The Kendog! Dog’s Movie House: “Black Mass” Engaging Gangster Biopic Featuring A Return To Form For Johnny Depp!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog!

I count myself as a big fan of the talent of Johnny Depp. I always admired the way he seemed to take roles that were diametrically opposed to his matinee idol good looks. Most of his work with director Tim Burton is wonderfully off-kilter and his Jack Sparrow from The Pirates Of The Caribbean series is one of the most iconic movie pirates of all time. That said, Depp has had a rough few years, seeming to cash paychecks in tent pole films that crashed with a thud more often then soared to box office heaven. Many fans, myself included, wondered whether or not Depp would ever return to that immersive form of acting that distinguished his early career. I am happy to report that with “Black Mass” Depp has created a character in his portrayal of James “Whitey” Bulger that is one of the most compelling and chilling in recent cinematic history. Dylan O’Brien In “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials”

I found myself pleasantly surprised by last year’s “The Maze Runner.” It was a more refreshing take on the Young Adult sub-genre of films, with its intensity, focus, and energy. As the first of a proposed trilogy, I found myself eager to take the next step, following Thomas (the returning Dylan O’Brian) and the other escapees of The Glade and The Maze into further adventures. Alas, “The Scorch Trials” while featuring decent performances and some energetic set pieces, lacks the original feel of the first film, instead choosing to imitate other superior films, a result that dilutes “The Scorch Trials” into only a passable time waster.
