Dog’s Movie House: “Madame Web” A Cinematic Trainwreck, Not Just A Superhero Film Trainwreck!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at what might be the worst superhero film ever made (although it’s tough to imagine anything beating 1997’s “Batman & Robin” for that particular title). Sony Pictures, who own the rights to Spider-Man but don’t use him in their movies due to some sort of agreement with Disney (home of the MCU), have decided to try and make money by mining Spidey’s rogue’s gallery of villains and side-characters for their own stand-alone films! When it works, you get the “Venom” films (primarily because of Tom Hardy’s bonkers performance). When it doesn’t you get crap like “Morbius” and now, “Madame Web,” which takes a cast of talented actors and leaves them adrift on a sea of bad writing, less-than-special effects, and editing choices that may leave you wishing you’d brought your Dramamine to the theater!

Dog’s Movie House: “Madame Web” A Trainwreck Of A Superhero Movie!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here and you have to hand it to Sony: They keep putting out subpar superhero movies like they’re going out of style, all because they want to retain the rights to their comic book properties. They own “Spider-Man” but because of their deal with Marvel Studios, it’s difficult to get the actual Spider-Man into any of their movies. So what do they do? They decide to create movies features obscure characters from the Rogue’s Gallery of Spider-Man allies and villains. Some of them, like the Venom movies, work because Tom Hardy is commited to a bonkers performance that makes the film, but most of Sony’s (non-animated) efforts are just terrible! Which brings us to “Madame Web” a superhero film that makes “Morbius” look like a cinematic masterpiece!

Dog’s Movie House: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” Gives The Heroes A Lively Animated Reboot!

Howdy folks! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been around for the better part of thirty-five years and have become embedded in our pop culture consciousness. People who barely know the films, comics and television shows know the names Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raaphael, and Donatello, as well as Splinter and Shredder. Michael Bay put his own roided out spin on things a few years back and those films were somewhat successful, but the playful nature of these “heroes-in-a-half-shell” haven’t had their playfull roots shown in awhile. Now comes “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayem” to provide a fresh, mostly invigorating spin on the Turtles with some wonderful animation!

Dog’s Movie House: “Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts” Is How You Reinvigorate A Franchise- “The Flash,” Not So Much!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here back after two glorious weeks of vacation to return with a whole bunch of stuff for the Movie House! Today we’re talking two early summer tentpoles that will satisfy their fans with varying degrees of success. First we have “Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts” which continues the robot-driven franchise’s move toward coherent, character driven storytelling and away from Michael Bay’s choatic form of filmmaking. Then we have “The Flash” the long anticipated film that marks the DC cinematic universe’s dive into their version of the multiverse. Unfortanately, “The Flash” is too busy with fan service and Easter Egg gimmicks to fully realize it’s potential, making for a fitfully entertaining cinematic experience that, at well over two hours, still feels frustratingly incomplete!

Dog’s Movie House: “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” A Brilliantly Animated And Engrossing Spider-Man Film!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with an early contender for not only best animated film of the year, but best film of the year, period! In 2018, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord hit audiences with “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,” a comic book story come to life that introduced cinematic audiences to Miles Morales, and Brooklyn kid who becomes his world’s version of Spider-Man. It was emotional, funny, kinetic, and very clever, not to mention beautifully animated and it became a sensation with audiences and critics alike, even beating the likes of “The Incredibles 2” at that years Oscars. Now the sequel arrives and it’s actually better than the original, full of eye-popping animation, more incredible characters, and a deep, complex story arc that is still easy enough to understand!
