A lot of sequels unfortunately follow the law of diminishing returns.  (See my review of “Now You See Me 2” here as proof)  Fortunately there is one filmmaker out there who knows that having a number after the title of your film doesn’t mean the finished product has to be a piece of brain dead dreck when it arrives in theaters.  That filmmaker is James Wan and he is rapidly becoming the preeminent voice in cinematic horror.  “The Conjuring” was one of the best horror films in recent memory and I’m happy to report that, while not quite in the same class as the original film, “The Conjuring 2” is close enough in quality to its predecessor that it is guaranteed to scare you witless in all the best ways. Horror is a lot like comedy.  It’s a subjective matter in that different people are scared by different things.  Many of my friends are visual when it comes to his scares; they have to see the carnage on screen to get a thrill.  I actually prefer horror films that use the “less-is-more” technique, allowing my admittedly overactive imagination to fill in the gaps.  I say this before I begin my review for “The Witch” because this film caters to folks of the later persuasion.  If you’re looking for instant gratification and oodles of violence and gore, please look elsewhere for your terror-filled thrills.  Continue reading

As a movie reviewer, I find that different types of films have different types of ambitions.  You can’t compare “Citizen Kane” to “Enter The Dragon” though both are sterling examples of their respective types of film.  To use the same set of critical guidelines for every film does the film, and the moviegoer, for that matter, a grave disservice and often keeps the reviewer from discovering some of the small, underseen gems of the cinematic world.  To that end, I bring you “Badass Monster Killer” a film made with enthusiasm, heart, and humor on a shoestring budget.   Continue reading

The Trailer Dog Park: Classic Lit With Zombies, The Coen Brothers Latest!

Howdy Folks!  It’s The Kendog!

Here’s another edition of The Trailer Dog Park with a couple of brand new previews for you.  First we have “Pride And Prejudice And Zombies” from the same guy that brought you that classic mashup “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.”  Definite WTF factor working there.  Then we have George Clooney reteaming with the Coen Brothers for a comedy called “Hail, Caesar!”  That one looks like it might be pretty good, and George could us a pick-me-up after the disaster that was “Tomorrowland.”  Enjoy and feel free to comment on what you think!  So Sayeth The Kendog!  Continue reading
