Dog’s Movie House: Statham, Ayer Don’t Offer Anything New In “Beekeeper” But It’s An Entertaining Action Romp Nonetheless!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a question. Do you like Jason Statham? How much you enjoy the chiseled British action star will most likely determine your enjoyment of “The Beekeeper” a new film from director David Ayer (“Fury”). Statham plays Adam Clay, a beekeeper who just happens to be a former “Beekeeper.” What’s the difference? Well a Beekeeper is an independently operating agent who makes Navy Seals and Special Forces look like, in the words of one character, pussies. They were created to keep the metaphorical “hive” running smoothly and answer to no one. This makes Clay a perfect character for Statham who seems to be more comfortable with exercising his physical muscles more than his acting chops.

Dog’s Movie House: “The Book Of Clarence” Highly Ambitious, Highly Entertaining, Yet Uneven Biblical Epic!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at one of the most original and ambitious films I’ve seen in a while. It’s called “The Book Of Clarence” and it’s the second feature from talented filmmaker Jeymes Samuel (“The Harder They Fall). I’ve got to tell you: Mr. Samuel isn’t afraid to go big his second time around. “The Book Of Clarence” takes place in Jeruselem in 33 A.D. during the time of Jesus Christ and his desciples. It tells the tale of Clarence (Lakeith Stanfield) the twin brother of disciple Thomas (also Stanfield) who decides to use trickery to become the new Messiah. Things change when the former con artist begins to believe and changes his life trajectory dramatically.

Dog’s Movie House: “Night Swim” Intriguing, But Slight PG-13 Horror Film!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at “Night Swim” a new horror film from Blumhouse studios that is an attempt to replicate the success of last year’s “M3GAN.” The good news is that the film is far better than the horrible trailers suggest. The bad news is that, unlike “M3GAN” “Night Swim” is hampered by it’s PG-13 rating and runs out of steam toward the end. Still the premise and the performances, along with a creeping sense of dread around the featured swimming pool for the film’s first half, make “Night Swim” a mostly entertaining horror film!

Dog’s Movie House: “Wonka” A Gentle, Throwback Prequel To Roald Dahl’s Most Famous Candymaker!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at Paul King’s “Wonka” a prequel to “Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.” It’s a film that I had trepidations about upon the announcement of it’s release, but under the light touch of director Paul King (“Paddington”) and some terrific performances, especially lead Timothy Chalamet, “Wonka” turns out to be a wonderfully light fable that harkens back to the fantasy films of yore!

Dog’s Movie House: “Godzilla Minus One” A Terrific Update Of One Of Film’s Most Famous Monsters!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at “Godzilla Minus One” the latest film featuring the giant fire breathing monster that debuted almost 70 years ago and has become a worldwide phenomenon. This one takes place during the years just after World War II and serves as a soft reboot of the of the creature’s origin story. It is also more character-driven than any other Godzilla film that came before (including the entertaining American Monsterverse series of films) and is interested in exploring topics other than the mass devestation of Tokyo!
