Dog’s Movie House: “Black Adam” Entertaining If Somewhat Formulaic Comic Book Origin Story!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here after a week of vacation to get right back into the movie mix. Let’s jump right in and talk about “Black Adam,” Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s passion project that has taken the better part of a decade to get to the big screen. Is it worth it? The answer is mostly yes, but not the slam dunk it could have been. “Black Adam” tries for a few edgy elements to differentiate itself from other superhero flicks, but the nature of the origin story keeps snapping “Black Adam” back into comfy CGI-kickassery-ville.

The Dogcast: “I Was A Communist For The FBI” delightfully corny old radio fun!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some more old radio fun! In honor of the new government-themed David O. Russell film “Amsterdam” I’ve got and old radio program from the early 1950s that’ll probably tickle your fancy. “I Was A Communist For The FBI” starred Dana Andrews as Matt Cvetic, an FBI agent who spent nine years as a Communist spy. It’s goofy propoganda at it’s finest although the rah-rah nature of the old radio show can be a little bitter when you consider that soon Joe McCarthy and his goons in Washington would soon be blacklisting all variety of entertainers for allegedly Communist ties. That said, “I Was A Communist For The FBI” is a fun show that has plenty of entertainment value to this day and, in the overall scheme of things, is a harmless diversion worth listening to. Enjoy the shows and feel free to comment either below or on my Facebook Page! So Sayeth The Kendog!

Dog’s Movie House: “Hellraiser” Reboot Is A Chilling Reminder Of How Good A Clive Barker Story Can Be!”

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at Hulu’s just-released “Hellraiser” film. It serves as a soft reboot of a franchise that has languished in direct to video hell for a couple of decades. And I’m pleased to announce that it’s very, very good. This version tells the tale of Riley (Odessa A’zion), a recovering addict who, in a moment of monetary despair, robs an old shipping container with her shady boyfriend Trevor (Drew Starkey). The only thing they find in a rusty safe and contained within, everyone’s favorite puzzle box from Hell. Known to fans as “The Lament Configuration” this diabolical puzzle box opens the gateway to a dimension of extreme pleasure and pain, often combined. This realm is ruled by the nightmarish Cenobites, the demon priests who adminster their so-called “gifts.” After accidentally opening the box with her brother’s blood, Riley has to find out the secret of the Configuration before she and her friends are dragged into Hell for an enternity of torment.

Dog’s Movie House: “Amsterdam” Proves That Mediocre David O. Russell Is Better Than Directors’ Better Efforts!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at David O. Russell’s latest, “Amsterdam,” for which he has assembled an all-star cast. Russell, known for Oscar nominated work such as “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle” writes and directs a tale set during and just after World War I. Three friends, two soldiers and a nurse, played by Christian Bale, John David Washington, and Margot Robbie, bond during their time together in Amsterdam. Separating after returning to the states, the three are reunited when Bale’s Burt (now a fringe doctor treating veterans) and Washington’s Harold (the lawyer helping him out) are called upon to investigate the death of their old unit commander, a respected general who died under mysterious circumstances. This death leads to a spiraling mystery involving rich families, powerful political cabals, and an attempt at facists to take over the United States government.
