Dog’s Movie House: “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” Is A Stunning Cinematic Ode To Both The Black Panther And Chadwick Boseman!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at one of the most anticipated films of the year. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” has the unenviable task of continuing a beloved superhero series without the presence of the hero! When Chadwick Boseman passed due to colon cancer in 2020, not only was his death an enormous personal loss but also left writer/director Ryan Coogler with a real professional dilemma. How do you continue a beloved franchise without the actor responsible for the hero’s popularity? In Coogler’s case, you create a narrative that parallels the grief the cast and crew felt at Boseman’s untimely passing and frame it against the growing pains of a powerful (if fictitious) nation coming to terms with its place in the world. And the result is a stunning, emotional, and cathartic achievement in filmmaking!

Dog’s Movie House: “Eternals” A Well-Acted Marvel Film That Stays Human While Going Cosmic!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here again with a look at Marvel’s latest spectacular saga of superheroes! (Say that three times fast, heh!). This one’s called “Eternals” and comes from the comic from the mind of the legendary Jack Kirby. It also has quite the cinematic pedigree as it was directed and co-written by last year’s Academy Award winner Chloe Zhao. That makes “The Eternals” a bit different in feel and atmosphere then your average Marvel comic book film. While it has the requisite action and special effects, “Eternals” also excels at developing character and story in a way that feels more intimate than most superhero films. The fact that these powered individuals are so relatable is a testament to Zhao’s storytelling ability.

Dog’s Movie House: “The Suicide Squad” Trippy, Amoral, Violent, And Wonderfully Hilarious!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with an observation of what a difference a few years makes. Way back in 2016 David Ayer wrote and directed the first “Suicide Squad.” While being a massive hit it was considered by many to be a disjointed, somewhat neutered mess, especially coming from the guy who wrote “Training Day” and directed films such as “End Of Watch” and “Fury.” Now we find out that . . . surprise, surprise, Ayer was interferred with at the studio by suits who wanted to make the film more like the bubbly Marvel films that have been so successful. As a result, the cut of “Suicide Squad” turned out to have too many chefs in the kitchen and Ayer’s version of what the film should be is hardly recognizable as such. Cut to five years later and the idea of DC’s version of a connected universe is decidely in flux at the moment. Now we have James Gunn (“The Guardians of the Galaxy”) commissioned to do a soft reboot on our favorite gang of supervillains trying to do good. Only this time the studio kept their paws off of this film and Gunn has free reign. The result is probably the most entertaining, off-the-wall comic book films in years. It’s like “Deadpool” and “The Avengers” had a child and the result is, put simply, awesome!

Dog’s Movie House: “Project Power” Entertaining Pseudo Superhero Film!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at Netflix’s latest original movie, “Project Power!” With a top-flight cast and an interesting hook, this film, although no classic, is more than interesting and entertaining enough to recommend for this weekend’s viewing. A socially provocative take on the superhero genre (with shades of Bradley Cooper’s “Limitless) there’s enough originality in “Project Power” despite the fact that the film borrows from several different films.
