Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some more old radio fun! In honor of the science fiction flavored “Don’t Worry Darling” (read the review here) I thought I’d include a couple of episodes of “X-Minus One,” and excellent science fiction radio program that was popular during the 1950s. “X-Minus” one featured adaptations of the works of Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein and others during it’s run and some of the stories still hold up well today. The Dogcast: Phil Harris/Alice Faye To Brighten Your Old Radio Fun!
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with one of my favorite old radio comedies. The Phil Harris/Alice Faye show was a spinoff from The Jack Benny Program. Phil Harris is best known as Benny’s boozy band leader and he was so popular he got his own show sponsored by Fitch Shampoo (appropriately called “The Fitch Bandwagon”) It was a slice of life show that feature Phil, his movie star wife Alice Faye, their children and a whole cast of characters. Highlights were Elliot Lewis as Phil’s buddy Frank Remley and Walter Tetley as mishevious grocery boy Julius. These two shows are from the 1947 season of “The Fitch Bandwagon” but in 1948 they’d change sponsors and work for Rexall Drugs. Later in the run the show was sponsored by RCA Victor. Enjoy these two episodes and hopefully they bring a smile to your face. So Sayeth The Kendog!
The Dogcast: Some Jack Benny/Rochester Old Radio Fun!
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some more old radio fun, this time in honor of Sidney Poitier who died today at the age of 94. In honor of Mr. Poitier’s accomplishments both onscreen and off, I’m including a couple of Jack Benny programs featuring Eddie Anderson as Rochester, Jack’s long-suffering valet. In reality, the African American Anderson was one of the first noteworthy black performers on mainstream radio and Benny paid him handsomely. It was extremely rare in an era in which the two most popular black characters on the radio (Amos And Andy) were played by two white actors. The Dogcast: Some Western Old Radio Fun In Honor Of “Cry Macho!”
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog with some classic old radio again. This time it’s a couple of episodes of the popular radio series “Have Gun, Will Travel” starring John Dehner as Paladin, a gun for higher based out of San Francisco. The show was popular enough that it made a successful transition to television. While not as consistently excellent as “Gunsmoke” it’s still a terrific show. The Dogcast: Some Old Radio Thrills from the Golden Age!
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some old radio thrills in the form of “The Whistler” one of the most popular radio progams of the forties and fifties, especially on the West Coast. In quality, it was second only to “Suspense” in terms of thrills and performances.
