Dog’s Movie House: “Avatar: Fire And Ash” Is A Visual Marvel That Continues To Impove It’s Characters!
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here and I have to say that it’s difficult to bet against James Cameron. Today he unleashes “Avatar: Fire And Ash” upon the world, the third entry into a series of movies that have made over five billion dollars with just two films. “Fire And Ash” continues the story of the conflict between the native N’avi on the planet Pandora and the Evil Earth corporation trying to strip mine the place in the name of universal greed. It’s a visual marvel that stands with some of the most awe-inspiring imagery ever put to film, but the narrative still lags behind a bit, particularly in the one-not portrayals of the various villains. Cameron’s writing is improving, though, and “Avatar: Fire And Ash” is easily the most emotionally engaging of Cameron’s latest sci-fi opus!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here and I have to admit I’ve enjoyed all of the Jurassic Park and World films. The World Trilogy has a lot more going for it than one might think, taking the story in interesting directions even though they don’t always pay off. But the dino action is always consistant and the special effects are always top notch. The main issue with the latter trilogy is that the dinosaurs become so commonplace that they cease to be scary or even that special! In that respect, Gateth Edwards’ “Jurassic World: Rebirth” is a mostly successful return the the series’ roots and making the beasts frightening again. Unfortunately a mostly outstanding film is hampered by a flat finale that saps the film of the tremendous energy it had generated up until that point!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a confession: I have never been a fan of the “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” movies. Even the first film which broke big in 2002 (it’s still the highest grossing rom-com ever) was mildly diverting at best. The second film was so unmemorable that I don’t even remember watching it. So when a third film in this series (does it really qualify as a franchise?) was announced it was met with a resounding “meh” by yours truly. Having watched the film my opinion has not changed.

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with an admission: I really love Steve Alten’s “Meg” series of books. They’re entertaining with relatable characters and some pretty cool ocean monsters. They are also fairly serious endeavors, so when the first “Meg” film came out in 2018, I was somewhat surprised to see a somewhat lighthearted, goofy take on the story. It was entertaining, to be sure, but part of me wishes for a more serious treatment of Alten’s fascinating universe. That said, “Meg 2: The Trench” ups the ante on shark action and silliness, and knowing that going into the film made me enjoy it a lot more!
Continue readingDog’s Movie House: “Hocus Pocus 2″ And” Munsters” Use Nostalgia To Wildly Differing Effects!
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at two features that play heavily into the nostalgia of past old shows (or movies.). The first is “Hocus Pocus 2” a sequel to the now Halloween standard “Hocus Pocus” nearly thirty years in the making. Streaming exclusively on Disney+, this time the infamous Sanderson Sisters (after a prologue set in 18th century Salem showing how the young Sandersons became witches) find themselves ressurected by two magic loving teens (by mistake, of course.) Now, in addtion to their original mission of distilling a potion from the bodies of children to keep themselves young, the trio also wants revenge against the dissendants of the reverend that set them on their path. It’s up to the two teens Becca (Whitney Peak) and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo), along with their friends, to stop the Sanderson Sisters from enacting their evil plan.
