Dog’s Movie House: “Killers Of The Flower Moon” A Detailed Look At A Dark Time In American History. . .But Boy, Is It Long!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here and I’m all for extending movie’s run times if the subject matter warrants it. (After all, the extended cut of “Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King” is over four hours and I can’t get enough.) However, certain films, no matter the pedigree, require a bit more editing to maximize their effectiveness. I am, of course, talking about “Killers Of The Flower Moon,” Martin Scorsese’s three and a half hour magnum opus about the Osage murders in the 1920s. Based on David Grann’s best selling novel, “Killers Of The Flower Moon” is meticulously acted, written and directed and shines a light on a period of American history not many people know about. It’s almost a perfect triumph, but the movie has a tendency to drag in spots and it kept me from being fully invested 100% of the time!

Dog’s Movie House: “Once Upon A Time. . .In Hollywood” Rambles Through 1960’s Tinseltown!

Howdy folks! It’s The Kendog with a look at Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film, “Once Upon A Time. . .In Hollywood!”

Brad Pitt & Leonardo DiCaprio in “Once Upon A Time. . .In Hollywood”

This goes out to my good friend Pat Walsh who has been standing tall on his movie-going soapbox for a loooong time opining about the lack of mature, adult fare during the summer movie season. Now we can argue about the creative merits of the big blockbusters but since Pat won’t see them on general principle, it’s difficult to get into creative debates about the individual films. What does matter is that we now have a blockbuster-type film filled with A-List movie stars, adult themes, a dynamic director and nary a sign of Thor and his magic sword, heh!

Dog’s Movie House: “The Revenant” To Reverential For Its Own Good!

Howdy folks!  It’s The Kendog!

There are films that are destined to be Oscar-bait.  Last year’s “Birdman” was one of those films and, while it is entertaining enough, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s film was too stylized for my taste. Well, he’s back with a film that definitely qualifies as Oscar-bait, and unfortunately my enjoyment of the film is not on par with many of my colleagues. “The Revenant” features some incredible scenes and an awards-worthy performance by Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role, but it also suffers from long shots of the wilderness that kill the film’s pace and a script that doesn’t develop the characters as well as they should. It makes for a frustrating experience. Continue reading
