Dog’s Movie House: “Men” Ambitious, Well Crafted Horror That May Not Be To Everyone’s Taste!
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at the latest from notable director Alex Garland. The man is responsible for a couple of the most ambitious science fiction movies in the last ten years. Garland gave us “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation.” Now he’s back and working in the realm of horror. His latest is called “Men” and it has all the hallmarks of what makes Garland such a creative and talented filmmaker. “Men” is atmospheric, expertly paced, and features excellent performances from his two leads, especially Rory Kinnear in multiple roles. It also has something of an ambiguous climax, another hallmark of Alex Garland’s work. It could be a metaphorical journey involving a woman’s grief or an incomprehensible horror fever dream, or maybe both. It’s up to you to decide, but if you keep an open mind “Men” is quite the rewarding experience!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at the latest Stephen King Adaptation to hit the big screen. It’s a new look at one of his early novels titled “Firestarter” and it’s about a little girl who has the ability to control fire with her mind and the evil government agency that’s after her. Traditional boiler plate stuff, but King was able to give it his usual horror spin and character development to elevate the tale from something rote to something, if not excellent, at least entertaining. A 1984 film adaptation starring Drew Barrymore is marginally better, but this version is the very definition of unexceptional despite a couple of story changes that could’ve made the film better.
Continue readingDog’s Movie House: “Halloween Kills,” “The Last Duel” On Tap For This Week!
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at two highly anticipated releases in theaters this week. First we have Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel” which features Matt Damon and Adam Driver as former friends and dueling knights who battle to the death over an accusation of rape. Then we have “Halloween Kills” the sequel to the highly successful 2018 reboot of the Halloween franchise featuring everyone’s favorite William Shatner-masked serial killer Michael Meyers. Of the two, “The Last Duel” is the better film, but “Halloween Kills” is not without it’s horror thrills though it fails to live up to the cleverness of it’s predecessor.
Continue readingThe Trailer Dog Park: “The Matrix Ressurections” features the return of Neo. Also Edgar Wright’s Latest A Time Travelling Horror Show!
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at two highly anticipated movies. The first is the return to the world of The Matrix with “The Matrix Resurrections” featuring the return of Keanu Reeve’s Neo (who looks a lot like John Wick now). Featuring groundbreaking special effects and a hopefully engaging plot, “The Matrix Resurrections” looks like an entertaining return to the world of virtual reality and high-tech wire-fu. Next we have Edgar Wright’s latest called “The Last Night In Soho,” which is about a woman in this time obsessed with the 1960’s whose fantasy and real world start to collide with increasingly horrific results. Edgar Wright is one of my favorite filmmakers and this looks crazy enough to be a refreshing original horror-noir piece that will stand out for all the right reasons. Enjoy the trailers and feel free to comment below or on my Facebook page. So Sayeth The Kendog!
Dog’s Movie House: “Malignant” interesting but flawed James Wan horror film!
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at James Wan’s latest horror opus, a film called “Malignant.” The creator of such horror classics like “Saw,” “Insidious,” and “The Conjuring” has come up with an original tale that has a lot to like but takes a little while to get going. The last half hour saves the film from becoming run-of-the-mill, but it morphs from a would-be scary film into a more of an action, science fiction hybrid. The first half of the film is a bit messy and inconsistent and some of the performances are a little, well, off. But taken as a whole, the novel concept and Wan’s filmmaking prowess gives “Malignant” an entertaining jolt at the multiplex.
