Dog’s Movie House: “Despicable Me 4” And “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” Show Some Life In A Couple Of Long-Running Franchises!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at two film franchises releasing their fourth installments this week! The first is “Despicable Me 4” starring Steve Carell as the former supervillain Gru and his hysterical Minions. The next is a Netflix Original that brings Eddie Murphy back to the role that made him a superstar forty years ago. You guessed it: Murphy returns as wisecracking Detroit cop Axel Foley in “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” While the fourth “Despicable Me” relies on fine vocal performances and the series’ signature slapstick fun, “Axel F” leans heavily into the nostalgia of the 1984 megahit (and to a lesser extent, it’s sequels). In fact “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” runs the risk of relying too much on said nostalgia but the performance by Eddie Murphy and his supporting cast keeps the film from falling into a rut!

Dog’s Movie House: “Coming 2 America” No Classic, But Sweet In Its Own Right!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at the long awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy’s long-awaited comedy hit “Coming To America.” It took a whopping thirty-three years for this sequel to finally be released and the obvious question is “is it worth the wait.” The answer is. . .sort of. It’s not the train wreck I feared when I first saw the trailers, but it’s never quite as inspired as the first film. “Coming 2 America” also relies a little too heavily on flashbacks from the earlier film to fully step out of its predecessor’s shadow. It’s got a lot of heart, though, and based on that and some good comic performances I can give “Coming 2 America” a solid recommendation.
