Dog’s Movie House: “First Man” Leads The Way Of What To See This Week!

Howdy Folks!  It’s The Kendog here with looks at a couple of this weeks films including Damien Chazelle’s latest, “First Man.”

Ryan Gosling is Neil Armstrong in “First Man”

Biopics are tricky things.   Do them right and you get a riveting cinematic incarnation of some of histories most important events.  Do it wrong and the audience is falling asleep just like they did during high school history class.  Fortunately, “First Man” is solidly in the former category although it does have a few flaws.   Plus we take a look at “Bad Times At The El Royale” and last week’s champion, “Venom.”

Dog’s Movie House: “House” And “Littlefoot” Solid Offerings For The Kids!

Howdy Folks!  It’s The Kendog with looks at “The House With The Clock In It’s Walls” and “Smallfoot!”

Jack Black, Cate Blanchette, and Owen Vaccaro fight evil in “The House With A Clock In It’s Walls”

Unless you’re the big bad Disney machine, a lot of times an animated film or a film for kids can get lost amongst the Mouse House’s publicity bulldozer.   Only Illumination studios with their “Despicable Me” juggernaut has been able to really compete.  In terms of quality, these two studios (and in the past, Dreamworks) are the top of the charts.  (I’m not counting Aardman animation and any anime into the mix).  So it’s nice to see Warner Brother’s Animation jumping back into the mix with their hilarious Chuck Jones-inspired “Smallfoot.”  Also oddly pleasing is horror auteur Eli Roth getting into the kid-scaring business with “The House with the Clock in it’s Walls.” Continue reading

Dog’s Movie House: “Fahrenheit 11/9” Shows Moore At His Most Focused!

Howdy Folks!  It’s The Kendog with a look at Michael Moore’s latest: “Fahrenheit 11/9!”

Michael Moore Takes On Donald Trump In “Fahrenheit 11/9”

Now I’m not a fan of our current President.   Donald Trump, in my humble opinion, is a bad president and an even worse human being.  Yet he was duly elected fairly in terms of our political system and, believe it or not, I can live with that.  I do have a hard time with everyone around decrying everything Trump says with fresh outrage as though this were the first time they were hearing Trump speak.   It’s like my granddaddy once said: “What do you expect from a pig but a grunt?”   Trump is who he is, but what surprised me about Michael Moore’s latest doc, “Fahrenheit 11/9” was how much more balanced and focused it was compared to his other agenda-driven works! Valak’s Up To Her Dirty Tricks In “The Nun”

You’ve got to love Hollywood!   Franchise building is something the studios want so desperately to succeed and if it can be part of a shared universe, all the better!   Last week the “Conjuring” universe gave as an origin story (of sorts) on the scary demonic nun first featured in “The Conjuring 2” and this week gives us the latest attempt to revive the alien Predator series whose first film premiered over thirty years ago!  And finally we’ve got a bouncy take on the noir thriller from Paul Feig, the director of “Bridesmaids” and “Spy.”  So which ones are worth seeing? Read on and find out!

Dog’s Movie House: “Searching” An Effective, Insightful Thriller

Howdy Folks!  It’s The Kendog with a look at the new film “Searching!”

John Cho is looking for his missing daughter in “Searching”

I know it’s a big “duh” but social media is everywhere, shaping our opinions until it often seems as though we have no valid train of thought unless it’s first filtered through the online pipeline.  The court of public opinion holds almost, if not more, sway than the actual court of law.   The #MeToo movement is a perfect example of this.  In the world of cinema, the online component has played a role in many thrillers, with the Unfriended series being the latest example.  However, Aneesh Chaganty’s “Searching” is a different and delightful animal altogether.   Continue reading
