Dog’s Movie House: “The Suicide Squad” Trippy, Amoral, Violent, And Wonderfully Hilarious!
Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with an observation of what a difference a few years makes. Way back in 2016 David Ayer wrote and directed the first “Suicide Squad.” While being a massive hit it was considered by many to be a disjointed, somewhat neutered mess, especially coming from the guy who wrote “Training Day” and directed films such as “End Of Watch” and “Fury.” Now we find out that . . . surprise, surprise, Ayer was interferred with at the studio by suits who wanted to make the film more like the bubbly Marvel films that have been so successful. As a result, the cut of “Suicide Squad” turned out to have too many chefs in the kitchen and Ayer’s version of what the film should be is hardly recognizable as such. Cut to five years later and the idea of DC’s version of a connected universe is decidely in flux at the moment. Now we have James Gunn (“The Guardians of the Galaxy”) commissioned to do a soft reboot on our favorite gang of supervillains trying to do good. Only this time the studio kept their paws off of this film and Gunn has free reign. The result is probably the most entertaining, off-the-wall comic book films in years. It’s like “Deadpool” and “The Avengers” had a child and the result is, put simply, awesome!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at David Lowry’s “The Green Knight” an update of the classic poem “Sir Gawain And The Green Knight.” As director and writer, Lowry has fleshed out the tale and given a decidedly human take on the formerly virtuous knight while all the while embedding the film with a dreamy, almost hallucinagenic style that is both unsettling and fabulous to behold, both in equal measure. Anchored by a fine performance by Dev Patel as the Gawain, “The Green Knight” is a unique and bold entry into the Arthurian sub-genre of fantasy films. It won’t be to everyone’s taste, however, as I will explain later.

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at Disney’s latest attempt to turn one of DIsneyland’s iconic rides into the next big film franchise. This time it’s “The Jungle Cruise” with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt lending their considerable star power to the film. Fortunately “The Jungle Cruise” has more in common with “Pirates Of The Carribean” rather than “The Country Bears” and director Jaume Collet-Serra (“The Shallows”) and his team have crafted a wonderfully entertaining film that honors both the ride as well as some classic adventure films that serve as this particular movie’s inspiration!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a look at two female-centric action films that give the ladies a chance to be front and center with the violence and mayhem. The first is “Gunpowder Milkshake” featuring Karen Gillan as an assassin who is outed by her employers after a couple of untimely mistakes. The second is Amazon Prime’s “Jolt” featuring Kate Beckinsale as a woman who suffers from major anger issues and is forced to put said issues to work when her would be boyfriend is murdered. Both films aren’t classics of the genre but are a lot of fun and get by on the charm and ability of the strong female cast.
