Extreme Weather In “Geostorm”

 

 

Timing is everything when it comes to the movies.  Release them at the right time and you have a huge hit on your hands, but suffer the misfortune of real-life events mirroring the subject matter of your film and the audiences will stay away in droves.   Witness this week’s two weather-related films: the disaster fantasy “Geostorm” and the true life tale of the Granite Mountain Hotshots “Only The Brave.”  The two films vary wildly in quality, but both have the misfortune of being released just after an entire slew of very real, very terrifying natural disasters have struck the country.  This means that audiences are going to be understandably disenchanted with the prospect of watching natural disasters reenacted on the big screen for their entertainment.  In the case of “Only The Brave” this is a real tragedy.   Continue reading →

The winter biggies are beginning their full court press in the form of final trailers.  “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” released it’s second trailer and boy, is it a stunner.  Consider my interest ramped to new all time high for this one.  Meanwhile, the new “Justice League” trailer is intriguing for the lighter comedy aspects (especially Ezra Miller’s Flash) but still shows more of the same from the other trailers.  Looking forward to Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, though.   And finally we have our first look at Josh Boone’s “New Mutants” which is presenting the intriguing idea of the X-Men (variations of them at least) in a haunted laboratory setting.  It’s certainly different than any other mutant movie that’s come before.  Enjoy all of them and feel free to comment below!  So Sayeth The Kendog!

The Trailer Dog Park: “Pacific Rim 2,” “Death Wish” Remake!

Howdy Folks!  It’s The Kendog!

The Jaegers are back in “Pacific Rim 2”

 

 

I was one of the few who really loved “Pacific Rim.”  It wasn’t the greatest film in the world, but watching giant robots beat the hell of equally gigantic monsters really appeals to my inner ten-year-old.   Fortunately it made enough money overseas to warrant a sequel and now the first trailer is here promising more robot bashing goodness.  Also included is Eli Roth’s update of the vigilante thriller “Death Wish” starring Bruce Willis.  I hope the film is better than the trailer which seems to embrace the goofy aesthetic of Charles Bronson’s later “Death Wish” entries rather than the rather sobering nature of the first film.  The script is by Joe Carnahan, so I’m willing to give it a shot.  Enjoy the trailers and feel free to comment below!  So Sayeth The Kendog!  Continue reading →

Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” from 1982 has transformed from a misunderstood underperformer at the box office at the time of its release to a science fiction classic almost four decades later.  There are several different versions of the film to view, discuss and dissect with friends or foes, and the film’s look is still beautiful all these long years later.   But make no mistake, “Blade Runner” is not a slam-bang action flick:  it takes it’s time to tell the story and those who find themselves disinterested in said story will find the film to be slow and uninvolving.  The same can be said for Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up, “Blade Runner 2049.”   Continue reading →

The bombing of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 has been covered quite extensively in the world of cinema, most recently in the Mark Wahlberg film “Patriot’s Day.”  But what we haven’t seen much of is the stories of the survivors of that terrible day and what they went through to rehabilitate themselves in the face of some pretty horrific odds.   “Stronger” David Gordon Green’s latest, does just that, focusing on the incredible true story of Jeff Bauman, a young man who lost both legs in the blast and had to fight not only to regain mobility, but to discover who he was as a person.
