The Kenblog: “What’s The Big Deal With The Oscars!”

Howdy folks!  It’s The Kendog With An Oscars Edition Of The Kenblog!

So the 2017 Academy Awards are now history and as I take a look at the trades, tweets, and on-line tirades everyone still seems to be up in arms about the mistake made last night in revealing the wrong best picture winner.  That they eventually got it right doesn’t seem to matter: the folks behind the Oscars are being crucified for making the mistake in the first place.  My question: what’s the big deal? Dog’s Movie House: “John Wick: Chapter 2” A Thrilling Roller Coaster Ride!

Howdy Folks!  It’s The Kendog!

Keanu Reeves returns as John Wick in “John Wick: Chapter 2.

“John Wick” has joined the ranks of movies such as “Predator” and “Aliens” and even “Die Hard” as one of the greatest action movies of all time.  It’s endlessly re-watchable, features a committed performance by Keanu Reeves in the lead role, and has an uncommonly strong emotional hook that gives the film more depth than it has any right too.  As a low-budget hit, a sequel seemed inevitable, but unlike the sequels to the above mentioned films, “John Wick: Chapter 2” is every bit the equal of its predecessor, providing more thrills without sacrificing the lean storytelling that marked the original film.

The Kenblog: “Remembering Bill Paxton!”

Howdy folks!  It’s The Kendog with a heavy heart this morning.  Bill Paxton is gone, passing away today from complications during surgery at the age of 61.   Paxton was probably one of the most recognizable character actors in the world, often doing his best work in supporting roles in some of Hollywood’s biggest movies.

Howdy folks!  It’s The Kendog!

Emma Stone And Ryan Gosling In “La La Land”

It’s definitely a tale of two movies this week.  I finally caught Oscar favorite “La La Land,” and I have to say it’s a darn sight better than any of the new releases this last week.  Is it worth the fourteen Oscar noms?  Well that’s a matter of opinion and I’ll let you know mine in a minute or two.   I can say “La La Land” is a vast improvement over the final (hopefully) installment of the long running “Resident Evil” franchise.  If this were a boxing match between two directors, Damien Chazelle (“Whiplash,” “La La Land”) would beat Paul W.S. Anderson (“Mortal Kombat,” “Resident Evil”) down like a government mule within a single round.

The Kenblog: Surprising Oscar Snubs!

Howdy Folks!  It’s The Kendog With Another Edition Of The Kenblog!

Well the Oscar nominations have just been announced and once again it comes down to movies most of the movie going public haven’t had a chance to see.  “La La Land” gets a record tying 14 nominations (and I’m still ashamed to admit I haven’t seen it yet) and Meryl Streep gets nominated for the 1,000,000nth time.  (More on that later.)  Still, there were some surprising snubs on the list and one movie favorite of mine whose non-inclusion in the Oscar festivities serves more as a case of wishful thinking than an actual snub.  Continue reading
