Dog’s Movie House: “Scream VI” A Very Good Continuation Of The Popular Franchise!

“Scream VI” is not overly scary (at least, not to me) but it does have some suspenseful set pieces and creative kills. Ghostface is as brutal as ever (he even uses a shotgun at one point) and the new setting in New York City makes for a refreshing change of pace from the previous films. Returning directors Matt Bettenelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett keep the pace brisk and writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick keep the atmosphere and self-aware dialogue well within the same domain as creator Kevin WIlliamson’s original story. There are enough twists and turns to keep viewers guessing and, as always, the final reveal connects all the movies and stories together up to this point.

The performances are uniformly good, with Barrera and Ortega continuing to develop as Sam and Tara, with the elder sister trying to protect the younger and the younger trying to get out from under the elder’s thumb. Gooding’s Chad adds a romantic angle to the proceedings and Brown gets to hit another monologue as the movie-obsessed Mindy. Legacy character such as Gale (Courtney Cox) and Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) get a lot of meat in their supporting roles. Newcomers such as Dermot Mulroney, Jack Champion, and Tony Revolori also get moments to shine as well.

“Scream VI” hits almost all the marks, but the meta humor is starting to wear thin at this point. Mindy’s “franchise” monologue is not as clever as it thinks it is and the references to classic horror tropes are not nearly as novel as they were at the beginning of the series, but this film more than makes up for those shortcomings with solid kills, good performances and a third act reveal that changes the tone of the film from straight slasher to something a little more interesting. Where most franchises are getting stale by the sixth installment, “Scream VI” continues to entertain and innovate! 4 Out Of 5 On Kendog’s Barkometer! So Sayeth The Kendog!
