Written and directed by David Lowery (“The Green Knight”) there is a certain amount of melancholy that goes along with the proceedings, including a different backstory that fleshes out the history between Hook and Pan. The whimsy of the animated film is gone, replaced by a certain grit that adds emotional weight while taking away some of the wonder of the tale.
That said, “Peter Pan & Wendy” is a very good film, managing several nods to the story and the original film while being it’s own thing. The actors are fine in their roles, with Law and Anderson being standouts. Lowery directs the set pieces with a sure hand and the special effects and cinematography are well done. I found myself enjoying “Peter Pan & Wendy” without really loving it. I think that may be my fault rather than the film’s. “Peter Pan” is one of my favorite animated Disney films and it’s tough for me to totally accept this version in place of the 1953 classic.
