Dog’s Movie House: “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” Is A Delightfully Funny & Emotional Capper To The Popular Series!

“Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” begins with Peter Quill/Starlord (Chris Pratt) still mourning over the loss of his beloved Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Losing himself in the bottle, Peter has isolated himself from the rest of his friends, only stirred to action when their base is attacked by the powerful Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) who works for a being called the High Evolutionary (a delightfully evil Chukwudi Iwuji). The attack critically injures Rocket (Bradley Cooper). It’s up to the Guardians to find the High Evolutionary and get the necessary information to save their friends life and perhaps the galaxy one last time.

“Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” has a fairly simple plot but Gunn packs a lot of detail, character, action and emotion into it’s two and a half hour runtime. Everyone gets a chance to shine here, but the movie really belongs to Cooper’s Rocket. Because of his relationship to the High Evolutionary and the latter’s need to find his most successful experiment, you get to see how Rocket was changed from a simple racoon into the smartass badass he is today. Though he spends most of the movie on life support, the flashback sequences really flesh out his backstory.

Because Rocket is at the center of the story, we get to see how the emotional bonds of the entire team have grown and changed since the group first got together. Pratt’s Quill isn’t as happy-go-lucky as he has been and it makes him more grounded and focused as a leader. His relationship with the latest incarnation of Gamora (who doesn’t remember or particularly like Peter) is an earnest and often funny attempt to reconnect with the woman he loves. Nebula (Karen Gillan) becomes my favorite character as her biting wit and anger are balance with a fierce affection for her newfound friends. Dave Bautista’s Drax is still as hilarious as ever, but he finds a serious purpose during the course of the film that leaves his identity as “The Destroyer” in question. Groot (Vin Diesel) is as awesome as ever and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) finds her voice as something other than the voice of reason among the team.

New characters like Poulter’s Warlock and Iwuji’s High Evolutionary are very interesting, with Warlock being a funny combination of power and naivete. Iwuji plays the High Evolutionary as a god-level narcissist without any redeeming features whatsoever. He is an prime example of intelligence and arrogance without conscience and he is truly a hissible villain.

Gunn’s script combines his trademark humor with real emotion that will have you grabbing for more than just one tissue. He also directs the movie with a smooth and inventive camera style that makes the eye-popping special effects all the more amazing. The worlds and creatures on display in “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” are truly breathtaking and really immerse the audience in the story. Overall, “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3” is one of the best Marvel movies in a while and a great time at the movies. Bravo to all involved. 5 Out Of 5 On Kendog’s Barkometer! So Sayeth The Kendog!
