Dog’s Movie House – “Blue Beetle” A Neat Superhero Film That’s Anchors The Action With A Strong Heartbeat!”

Now that sounds like standard boiler plate superhero stuff, and you’d be rightr if that’s where “Blue Beetle” remained. Fortunately, director Angel Manuel Soto and writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer pack this film with so much heart and humor that the film becomes something of a marvel. Much has been made of the Latin culture on display here and that definitely sets “Blue Beetle” apart from other films of this type, but the Reyes are relatable to anyone, which makes this the perfect superhero movie for the entire family.

The cast is uniformly good with Mariduena anchoring the film as Jaime. He has the comedy chops as well as the dramatic ones to carry the film on his shoulders. Fortunately he doesn’t have to as he gets great support from Bruan Marquezine as ally Jenny Kord, Damian Alcazar as father Alberto, Elpidia Carrillo as mother Rocio, Belissa Escobedo as sister Milagro, George Lopez ans uncle Rudy, and in a wonderfully emotional and comic performance, Adriana Barraza as Nana, a grandmother who has something of a checkered past. The interplay between all of these characters feels real and genuine. In fact, the film’s almost twenty minutes in before a single scene of superhero-like action. It makes the action set pieces weightier and the film is better for it. There are several scenes of surprisingly strong emotional impact as well as scenes that will make you want to stand up and cheer. “Blue Beetle” has that kind of impact.

It’s not perfect as I would have liked to see more interaction between Jaime and the suit’s AI Khaji-Da (voiced by Becky G) but these are minor quibbles at best. This is a superhero film that set’s itself apart from the others because it favors emotion and story over spectacle with a sense of family and community at the center.
