There’s something to be said for a good old-fashioned story filmed in a good old-fashioned way.  There are a variety films out there that go out of their way to be cutting edge both in technique and story.  However, there are reasons many of the classics of the golden age of cinema have endured.  A story well told is a story well told no matter the era, and while Robert Zemeckis’s latest wartime drama “Allied” doesn’t achieve those lofty heights, it entertainingly harkens back to a different era of moviemaking. Disney is on a hell of a roll lately.  With “Star Wars,” “Zootopia,” “The Jungle Book,” “Finding Dory” and “Civil War” making incredible amounts of cash (and being darn good movies to boot), the House of Mouse could already close the books on a record-setting year.    But they aren’t done yet.  In a couple of weeks we get our first stand alone Star Wars movie, “Rogue One.”   Before that tent pole, however, Disney Animation has another gem on its hands in the form of “Moana” one of the most colorful and touching films of the year! The original “Now You See Me” was a diverting bit of fluff featuring a fine cast of actors having a good time with the ridiculousness onscreen.  More importantly, the film was about the ins and outs of magic and illusions.  Now since “Now You See Me” made a global killing at the box office, here comes the inevitable sequel and, unfortunately it’s as inevitably mediocre as one would expect.  Continue reading

Deciding on whether or not you’ll like a movie like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows” is a lot easier than in other films.  Ninety percent of your decision can be found in the title.  What do you expect from a film about four mutated brothers who happen to be turtles and also happen to be ninja?  After that decision is made, then you can start assessing the standard criticisms of the film: acting, script, production values, etc.  This review is for those of you who’ve gotten past that ninety percent and the verdict is actually quite good.  Fans of the turtles will find a lot to enjoy about this second installment. Director Bryan Singer helped usher in the modern era of comic book filmmaking with the original “X-Men” way back in 2000.  Since then the franchise has continued to perform in a very strong manner with its most recent entry “Deadpool” becoming the most successful R-rated film of all time.  Now after the success of “X-Men: Days of Future Past” Singer and company have tackled another popular storyline in the mutant comic series: The All-Powerful mutant Apocalypse and his Four Horseman.  The result an extremely entertaining, somewhat dense comic film that sets up future installments without sacrificing the onscreen story.
