Movie News: “Masters Of The Universe, Jungle Cruise,” Development News

Howdy Folks!  It’s The Kendog!

I have some intriguing news with the development of two fairly popular children’s properties.   First, Variety is reporting that Thor: Ragnarok writer Christopher Yost has been tapped to write the script on the long-gestating “Masters Of The Universe” film for Escape Artists studios.  You can read the entire story here.

This can be a good thing as I liked Yost’s work on the Marvel “Thor” movies as they both struck the right tone between the fantastic world of Asgard and the real world of Earth.  Perhaps he can do the same thing for the mystical world of Eternia.  I would love to see He-Man, Skeletor, and the other denizens of the Mattel-produced toy franchise brought to the screen in an entertaining manner.  On a personal note, I grew up with these toys, the awful cartoon show, and the underrated film with Dolph Lundgren.  I always imagined this property as a hyper-violent Conan/Lord of the Rings hybrid.  We probably won’t get that, but something close would be a nice cinematic tonic.  Hell, if they could do it with “Transformers” why can’t they do it with “Masters Of The Universe?”

In other news, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is back in the Disney stable, attached to star in a movie based on the famous Jungle Cruise ride at Disneyland.  Now while this may seem like a goofy idea at first, I for one believe that, if done correctly, could be massively entertaining.  Johnson has great comedic timing as well as his famous musculature and so long as the filmmakers pay attention to those nagging details like story and character, we could be looking at another “Pirates Of The Caribbean.”  I love the ride in all of its corny splendor and the idea that the filmmakers are pitching the idea as a period piece gives me hope.  There is no timetable on filming and no director has been attached, but with Johnson on board, expect things to move very quickly.  You can read the variety.com story here.

Enjoy!  So Sayeth The Kendog!
